Hi, and welcome!

What you will find here, and why it exists.

You will find here help and guidance through the commercialisation of emerging technologies, particularly biotechnology and big data.

Civilisation's technological progress is in an exponential phase, but very few understand or benefit from the state of the art. I help extract value from emerging technologies, and bring competitive advantages to business and beneficial impact to the community.

Who is Christopher Pendlebury?

Christopher is a commercial data scientist with a background in medical biotechnology and mathematics. With over ten years of experience at the nexus between new and emerging technologies in molecular biology, bioinformatics and big data and commercial and clinical realities involved in bringing them into use, Christopher provides friendly, versatile and skilled professional service -- helping to bridge the gap between academia and industry.

He joined Applied Precision Medicine in 2012, and has served as Chief Science Officer since 2016. He works to bring novel testing platforms and medical devices from the research lab into clinical use, through means of clinical software development, bioinformatics, big data analytics and regulatory compliance, while leveraging advanced technologies such as Oracle Cloud Infrastructure.

Volunteered as a Wildfire Firefighter with Mooroolbark CFA from 2006-2013, awarded a National Emergency Medal for service during the 2009 bushfires.

Christopher holds a Bachelor of Biotechnology with Honours from Monash University and a Graduate Certificate in Mathematics from Charles Sturt University. Father of two.

Technological Independence

Christopher feels it is important that technology serves you, instead of the other way around.

The following principles and recommendations therefore apply: Prefer simplicity over complexity - does your fridge really need to talk to the internet?

Avoid planned obsolesence - Choose only that which respects your right to repair.

Avoid mass surveillence - Resist the trend to pay for the privilege of keeping devices which are always listening, always recording in your home.

Use Free and Open Source software wherever possible - Most people are well served with Ubuntu as an operating system and Firefox as a web browser. Prevent hostile code from being run on your machine with uBlock Origin and uMatrix. Use LibreOffice suite for word processing, spreadsheets, and presentations, and GIMP for image processing.

For programming, Python is a good general purpose language, and R is great for statistical computing and producing scientific graphics. Vim is a very powerful text editor.

The useful life of android phones can be greatly extended with LineageOS.

Most ordinary people should never need to pay money to run software on a computer that they own.

Testimonials

"I am continually impressed with Chris’ dedication and sincerity to his work. I met Chris during the Biotechnology course at Monash University and have continued to discuss a number of issues with him over the years.

Time and time again, Chris displays an intuitive understanding about people and processes. This unique high-level insight makes him a very special commercialization consultant – who will truly be able to understand your goals and objectives. Chris’ passion and commitment for science, technology and biotech commercialization is clear.

He is widely read on the subject and grows his depth of knowledge through iterative autodidactic learning. Most importantly, Chris is one of the most objective, focused and trustworthy people I’ve ever met – these are important characteristics which distinguish Chris from the rest. I wish Chris well in his endeavours and look forward to collaborating with him in other projects in future."

Shama Kazmi, Student, Monash University, studied with Christopher at Monash University, July 1, 2010

"As a tutor in the Biotechnology course at Monash University I have taught Christopher in four units over four years. I found him to be a serious and highly intelligent student with ideas on a wide range of topics. His work was often thought provoking. Christopher was an active participant in class discussion and made valuable contributions. While he worked effectively in groups, Christopher often preferred to work alone. In his fourth (honours) year of the Biotechnology degree Christopher designed, developed and implemented a very good experiential program for year 12 students in the laboratory in which he was undertaking his research component of the honours program."

Dr Charlotte Brack, Senior Lecturer, Faculty of Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences, 26 February, 2010
